ActiveDays and Parkbus are heading to the beautiful Kortright Centre for Conservation to take part in the Sugarbush Maple Syrup Festival. We will take part in a two-hour tour to learn about this fabulous tradition. The program includes hands-on learning about the history of syrup making. We will learn about the equipment used, forest management practices and cooking procedures of this sustainable resource. Along the trail we will see how sap is produced and flows within the tree, how to identify maple trees, and how farmers tap their trees for sap. At Kortright’s demonstration sites, visitors will meet a pioneer and modern day syrup-maker who will describe how they process sap into syrup. Of course, we will also get to have a taste of some real maple syrup.

After the tour, we will have one hour to explore the beautiful trails and play outside. Go for a hike, bring a ball or have a picnic! It’s a great place to explore.

This is family friendly programming that is open to participants of all ages.

We will depart Toronto at 9:30 am (9:15 from 30 Carlton Street and 9:30 from Dufferin and Bloor). Once we arrive at the Kortright Centre for Conservation, we will have a two hour Maple Syrup Tour and then an hour to explore the centre and trails. We will leave Kortright at 1:30 pm and return to Toronto by 2:30pm.

We can’t think of a better way to spend the last Saturday in March.

YOUR TRIP LEADER: WALKER KITCHENS

Walker Kitchens is ActiveDays Program Coordinator, and he loves learning outdoors. Childhood summers spent outside in Ontario and Newfoundland fostered a deep curiosity within him that continues to grow. This desire to explore led him abroad. After two years of working as a facilitator in Cambodia and India, Walker has returned home to Toronto keen to venture back into the Canadian environment. Knowledge sharing and community building energize him and he is excited to help build a community that is eager to share ideas, stories and skills in a collaborative way. When you see him, ask him to tell you a story and make sure to share with him a passion, skill or story of your own.
